The value of design

Good residential design solves problems in awkward floor plans, creates new, more enjoyable living spaces - as well as it increases the value of a property.

Every building should have a timeless quality. A new addition should "look like it could always have been there". A new house should still be appealing a half century later, and not smack of a faded, awkward style that lasted only a few years. It should also fit as comfortably within it's neighborhood as it should it's natural environment; not because its the same - but because its harmonious.

Each project deserves and has unique qualities, because each clients needs and tastes and wishes are different. Having lived all my life in New England, I am versed in the traditional styles of the region - starting from the beginning of our country. Having traveled some, and through education, I've soaked up the essence of many other styles from across America and Europe. Timeless design is most often the result of a melding of the key features of several compatible traditions - plus just the right twist to make it really work.

Finally, and of primary importance: the best materials and skilled tradesmen should be chosen. Both should fit each projects budget - even if the size of a structure needs be reduced as a consequence, or scope of work cut back. To me, best often means the simplest materials like wood clapboards; even though artificial siding materials promise no "maintenance", their visual quality pails - and everything needs some "maintenance". The average house from the first half of the 20th century was built with more attention to those principles than in the later half. There are new techniques that have been tested well enough over the last two decades to merit use with confidence, but traditional materials have stood the test of time - because they do just that.
